Transition

I ease
my body
down
into the water
A cool slip of consciousness
pulled
Through the cord of tendon and nerve

The fading image of daylight
Reflected in the float of a leaf

The branches opening overhead

A dance of moon and clouds
across the sky

The cricket time of night
Where mind and matter merge

A draping mist moving through the shadows

The cup of my hand holding
A thought for a moment

Releasing it

The lap of breath on bone
In consonant rhythm
With the stars.
