Trust In The Lord Poem by Olorunleke Olorode

Trust In The Lord

Hey you
Why so silent with no words?
Your indifference say no more
Of your value towards us
Every sunday and fridays are the holies of purity

When our purse do make yours to laugh
How much now is garri?
How much now is fuel?
Not to say of the exchange rate today

Yet in your dignity prayer walk was made
To honour the man in power.
87 naira was more of a deal than 1k we celebrate today,
Not only is the 1k such a bound of joy.

That rehabilitation of those making us smile to our grave
After ransome demands without release
Is your focus.
It is in your ways to say that those good people are our brothers

What an audacity?
What a complicit?
Daily bath in our cry and blood
Is your joy and money bank
But on the sabath you stand on pulpit to preach salvation

Oh tell me not that you are not part
But your complicit and defense of them says it all.
The trauma and death cannot be quatified
Yet your loved ones are in massions with hefty guards,

While the innocents are in the forest
No facility to be used to get the good guys
Yet Kalu was picked without a blink
Keep praying to God to secure you.

So you preached
But countless of armed officers are your guards
While yours have all relocated from our space.

Oh my bad
Why not dicharge those armed men from being your guards,
Relocate yours to this space?
For us all to keep trusting in the lord to secure us.

Orire has not recovered from the friendly lash
And the demands of your brothers are not limitless.
In a land where witches have the powers to fly
But cant fly to secure our beloved in the forest.
Where herbalist can call on sango, esu, ogun
But cant call on them to savage our land.

Have they all been blindfolded against our land?
Should we say this is a game of the capitalist against the poor?
What then shall we say?
Trust in the lord with all your heart
But where it is neccessary, apply your brain!

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
The Bite of Economic Reality How much now is garri? / How much now is fuel? / Not to say of the exchange rate today...87 naira was more of a deal than 1k we celebrate today You grounded the poem instantly in the everyday struggle for survival. The contrast between the nostalgic ₦87 fuel price and today's soaring inflation paints a stark picture of how much ground has been lost while the masses are told to simply 'pray.' The Critique of Religious & Political Hypocrisy You masterfully exposed the disconnect between the pulpit and the reality of the streets. The hypocrisy of leaders who preach blind faith and divine protection—yet surround themselves with heavy security and relocate their families abroad—is called out with unapologetic candor. The Agony of Insecurity While the innocents are in the forest / No facility to be used to get the good guys Your reference to the kidnapping crisis, the payment of ransoms, and the bitter irony of 'rehabilitating' the perpetrators while victims languish in the forests is deeply moving. It captures the helplessness and anger of a people who feel abandoned by the system that is supposed to protect them. The Failure of Traditional Escapism It was a brilliant poetic choice to bring traditional beliefs into the fold as well. By questioning why witches and herbalists who can allegedly summon Sango, Esu, and Ogun cannot use those same powers to secure the forests, you dismantle every form of spiritual escapism—both modern and traditional. The Verdict The concluding lines are the perfect anchor for the entire piece: Trust in the lord with all your heart / But where it is neccessary, apply your brain! It is a striking call to action, demanding critical thinking and accountability rather than passive, blind compliance to a system that profits off the suffering of the poor.
