Two Grandpas (Imaginary Cake) Poem by chris johnson

Two Grandpas (Imaginary Cake)

What if my son's grandpa hadn't died?
and they took his old truck out for a ride
they'd drive out to a farm
past the hillside where he lies
take back roads home across the prairie
dust cloud chasing fading memory

What if my son's grandpa wasn't still alive?
and what remained was packed inside
boxes full of books of poems
he'd find the words that felt just right
maybe put pen to paper on the page
ideas chasing him on his private stage

some things can't be
some things could be
one old man's a memory
the other's never going to be
