Two Old Neighbors This New Year Poem by RIC BASTASA

Two Old Neighbors This New Year

there are only two of you
in such a big house
partaking dinner and a dog
outside waits for his share.

a glass of beer a slice of ham.
a slice of fruitcake as desert
a glass of red wine for her and
another peach or pear.

at twelve midnight all the fireworks
create the sparkle and the noise
in the streets and in the skies.
the white dog trembles in fear
and hides in the corner of your
sound proofed room.

both of you shall sleep soundly
twinkling lights on the ceiling
are your created stars.
soft blankets and memory pillows
become your own universe
