Until Yesterday I Waited Poem by Steven S. Walsky

Until Yesterday I Waited

until yesterday I waited
hands in my pocket,
leaning against a cold wall
the one with the lone window shuttered to the night
like my eyes,
closed to the reality of life

I looked down and saw the shadows cast
by fleeting dreams
rushing past,
rushing past

until yesterday I waited
my feet growing cold,
a jacket willfully too thin
hopelessly caught in a romantic novel without a plot
turning blank pages,
ignoring the numbness growing within

I looked down and saw the shadows cast
by fleeting dreams
rushing past,
rushing past

until yesterday I waited
breaths edging slower,
senses ebbing ever away
leaving but a shell of love to face the morning light
my heart asking,
when do I take flight

I looked down and saw the shadows cast
by fleeting dreams
rushing past,
rushing past

until yesterday I waited
but not today,
not today
now feeling,
the words you were afraid to say
