Us, As It Is Seen Poem by Saskia Harjono

Us, As It Is Seen

For Alvin, a dear friend.

In the Legend of the Three Kingdoms
when chaos was all that’s seen
you are Sun Ce and I’ll be Yhou Zu
together marching on to wars
fighting side by side
protecting each other
there’s nothing I wouldn’t do
if it was for your victory

In the Bikini Bottom tale
we are like the idiot Spongebob and Patrick when they’re together
they complete each other
for Patrick would be lost without Spongebob
and Spengebob’s life wouldn’t be the same without that stupid starfish

Hakuna Matata!
that would be our motto when we’re Timon and Pumbaa
you see, it means no worries for the rest of the day!
well, they’re there, but they seem fewer
when we’re on each other’s side

I would say we’re like Alexander the Great and his best buddy, Hephaestion.
But then, no! They were gay, and we’re... (I know I’m not. Are you?)

But in our tale
in our very own world of reality
you’re you and I am me
together we live our lives
supportive like Sun Ce and Zhou Yu
fuzzy and reckless like Spongebob and Patrick
carefree like Timon and Pumbaa

I am so blessed
to have been given someone as special as you
who always watches my back
and keeps me safe and warm in any possible way

And if it’s not too much
my dearest, most special friend,
can I keep you in every step of my way?
