Wakeful Death Poem by Talia Anziliero

Wakeful Death

The whispering of the trees,
The silence and buzz of animal activity,
Is now just a distant long gone memory.

For now we deplete,
What we need most to keep,
The ever abundant biodiversity,
It’s a term used for a range or variety of animals and trees and objects and things.
But did you ever stop to think that it could circle the sink,
And put our lives and that of others on the brink?
Little do you know that they need to live,
In order for us to grow and grow old.

The Amazon, Black Sea, Aral Sea and Lake Chad,
Now must live with death and destruction,
Falling all about them.

“Introduce the species! ” they cry,
And watch as crops and native animals die,
But they do not blame themselves,
An apocalypse is what they call a blunder,
As the diversity stumbles and is torn asunder.

“Wood! ” they cry is what they need,
And the Amazon lies at its seed,
So now we end our reign,
In struggled breath and dying in vain.

“Tear down this tree! ” and,
“Tear down that tree! ” and watch again as species die,
“But fast growing trees are all the rage! ”
But not if you wish to be saved.

For the fast trees are fewer lovers to CO2,
Than that they care to mention,
So as the old trees groan and fall,
You seal our tombs once and for all.

“Who do we blame if not ourselves? ! ” You cry as dead fish lay about everywhere,
Who? You ask? Well, lets see, there is the UN, Canada, EN and Japan.

They suckle and they breed,
They consume and they hate,
But when is our expiration date?
30,40 years on, is what they say,
“So? ” They cry and shake their fists in rage.

“If we do not die today, why make us save? ”
“Why not blow everything we have? ”
Well, if you wish to destroy, then by all means,
But that shall be it after all.

The plants shall die,
More animals shall die,
And the shadow of death shall linger,
For shopping malls and suburbs,
Is what is killing us all.

We shall watch the corrupt,
And weep for the dead,
We shall be sent to a shallow and early grave,
For the air shall be too thick,
And the forests to thin,
To support such a demanding need.

“What can we do? Oh, what can we do? ”
Well I have some simple clues for you:
Conserve and preserve,
Love and care,
Watch out and beware.

Be kind to wildlife,
Build homes,
Don’t break them,
For your natural flora and fauna,
Be kind to them and they’ll be kind to you,
We shall be our own heroes for true.

So please remember;
Conserve and preserve,
Love and care,
Watch out and beware,
And you could help save us all.
