Waking Dream Poem by Lydia Thacker

Waking Dream

Rating: 4.5

Lightning flashes behind closed eyes
A numbness settles on the soul within
As though my spirit has taken up residence
Within my mind alone,
Abandoning my body to dreamless sleep
While my thoughts dwell on all that I can yet see
Through the darkness of lids closed tight

Perception lingers and heightens
The spider web beneath the table
Draws my attention
As does the song I hear
Resonating in my head

I see a child smiling
Then realize it is but a reflection
Of my innermost self

Dancing on the tip of a knife
I feel a great balancing act
Pieces of a puzzle I had thought missing
Fall suddenly into place

An ordered chaos
Rules my being
I walk in a field
Where candy kisses grow

The freshness of life
Suprises me
As I feel nature's soft caress
Like the sun touching my bare shoulder

My spirit travels the night
But the dawn brings me home
My wandering soul once more
Settling for the fleshy temple
The gods made to house it

My body awakens
Though I yet sleep
I am aware of a receding
Numbness in my limbs
Then I find the peace of dreams
