We Are Brand New Poem by Dennis Ryan

We Are Brand New

May 12,2022

--for Kim

'There is no beauty in New England like the boats.'
- George Oppen, 'Product'

'I was careful of her'
- e.e. cummings, 'she being Brand/-new'

We are the products,
and this one in particular
is all yours—the size, the shape,
how tall it stands, the price,
the money it makes—
it's all yours, I said,
and nothing more
and nothing new
except as you are new—
I care more for you.
And sometimes
your eyes open
to include me,
and then, again,
we are brand new.
