We Met. Poem by K.D Cox

We Met.

Let's not try to imply too much effort
or it'll never work.
My lover,
my sweet, beloved companion.
That's all you are to me now,
apart from a burden.
Oh, you are so...so beautiful.
You're burning your beauty and pride
under alcohol
and pathetic lies.
You can't lie to my face.
Even the words, 'I love you'
Never met my eyes.
But Love, oh, you tried.
Love never met my eyes.
You said it,
but looked away.
And yet, I beg for it.
I beg for the pain of rejection
that you don't even know you're drowning me in.
