Wee Jamie No.2 (By J.A.Gleason) Poem by Andrew Wright

Wee Jamie No.2 (By J.A.Gleason)

Wee Jaimie's paw, a sailor man,
Gey oft would spin a baw,
Aboot the time he minded fine,
When life was guid and braw.

Wee Jaimie was a spunkie lad,
Wha couldna bide the schule,
Sae like his paw he ran awa,
Tae gang tae Ullapool.

Wee Jaimie found himself a ship,
That lookit good and slow,
He gripped a cord and swung aboard,
Then crepit doon below.

Wee Jaimie himself awa,
Ahint a bale o' straw,
He had a piece, a jeely piece,
Sae whiles he took a chaw.

Wee Jaimie slepit weel thon nicht,
But when the sleep was through,
He felt the ship aroon did tup,
Forbye his tummy too.

Wee Jaimie stuck it oot until,
He couldna' stick it mair,
He felt sae bad the pair wee lad,
He crepit up the stair.

Wee Jaimie heard a voice he ken't,
That gied an awfu' roar,
He lookit roon and there he foon'
A sailor man - his paw!

Wee Jaimie said, I'm ill, ye ken,
I shouldna' left the shore,
It's awfu' wrang like this tae gang,
And losh' I want ma maw!

Wee Jaimie's paw, said, Och! Ye wean,
Ye'd nae hae ganged sae far,
We're doon the Clyde and there we bide,
Along by Greenock bar.

Wee Jaimie noo is back at schule,
And minds his lessons fine,
But Paw says wait, he's no that blate,
He's only markin' time.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Andrew Wright was a Prisoner of War, captured at Dunkirk. This poem is taken from a notebook he kept while in the POW camps. It is difficult to believe that the writers of all of these poems were men who had in the main left school at the age of 14. Where he attributes the poem to an individual I have included that attribution. Andrew Wright died in 1987. These poems were uploaded by his son. Apologies to the non-Scots who might have difficulty with some of this one.
