What Are We Poem by Okoemu Okoemu Okoemu

What Are We

Give me water to drink
I am thirsty;
Get away, you are not in my class.

I know, you are the millionaire's daughter,
I am the grave digger's daughter; but I am a human being and so are you.

Give me food to eat,
I am hungry.

Get out of here we are not of the same class, I am the governor's son and you are the teacher's son.

I know, but we are all human beings; that's our common root.

Marry me, for I love you.

Get lost, we are not in the same class, I am the President's daughter, you are the peasant farmer's son.

Yes I know, but we all are human beings.

Visit me for I am sick and dying.

Get out for we are not of the same class,
I am the child of the general overseer and you are the child of the church cleaner.

I know, but we are all but human beings; from same creator,
Created by the same means,
Warmed and cold by the same summer and winter,
If we die, shall we both not be earthed?
We may not be equal, but we are equal.
