What I See, What I Promise Poem by Virginia Cairns

What I See, What I Promise

Most people look at you
And see a scary man
someone they don't want around

That's not what I see
I see a crumbling sweet man
Who's strong on the outside

Most people who talk to you
Hear a kind caring man
Someone they want to be friends with

That's not all I hear
I not only hear a sweet man
But I also hear a heartbroken man
Poetic, shy, emotional, and scared

Many people who date you
They just see a person to use to make time pass
Someone who is just an item to them

That is the farthest thing from what I see
I see a human being, a man
Someone with feelings, hopes and dreams

I see what those girls have done to you
How they've made you cry
How they misused you, broke you, stomped on and threw you away

I may not know what it's like to date you
I may not know how your mind works
I may not even know all there is to know about you

But this I do know
I know that if given the chance
I will be there for you

I will help shoulder your burdens
I will try and mend your aching heart
I will hold your hand and comfort you any way I can

If you let me
I will truly care for you
Like no one else has

I promise you this
I will love you like no other
I will touch your heart and cherish it always

I will do everything in my power
To not hurt you
And if I do
To make up for it always
I will treasure you always and forever
