What If Poem by Lola Sanchez

What If

what if I never forget you
what if you always remain
what if in years to come
your hold is as tight as ever

continually I think
I'm over you
I have thought I have been over you
that I'll get over you
that I am over you

but your image still lingers
albeit in the background
like a double exposed photo
-a phantom over the present

your voice is still a distant echo in every thought that crosses my mind
every memory
every argument or debate I enter into

what if I can never forget you
what if forever and always
your love is my craving
your eyes are what I see before I kiss
your laugh what I hear before I smile

what if
what if despite of you
and despite of me
I can never forget you
?
