What It's Like - Poem by Katie Burak

Do you know what it's like?

To not know how to make friends
To not know how to relate to kids your age?
To communicate normally
About things people actually care about?

What it's like to feel lonely
When there's people around you?
To make a few attempts act and look nice,
But not have it be enough?

To feel like you want to die?
To run away?
Do you know what it's like?

To know you will probably never
Become a mother?
To want to cry
But you can't?
To want to be yourself
And have everyone tell you to be girly?
To lose a best friend
Who was actually a cat?

You know that others have it worse
But that doesn't eliminate the pain you feel
Rooted in your soul.
Your opinion doesn't seem to matter.
You're obese.

People think you're stupid.

Withdrawn from the outside world.

To hate yourself
And everyone around you?
To want to kill someone?

Now you know what it's like to be me.
