What Life Is. Poem by Ragy Sandid

What Life Is.

Rating: 4.0

You know what life is?
Let's start at the beach.
Although you live miles away
That's what you always try to reach.

As a notion it is sweet
As a picture it is even sweeter
As reality rarely does soul meet
Its real reflection or greater.

Why the beach you ask
Why so much blue, yellow, red and white?
Why do we need to task
Ourselves to a pulp till we salivate the site?

Because it's a goal
It's easy, it's out there
Though people might smudge through coal
They still want
That which is beyond compare

So 365 are traded for six or twelve
So many days looking over one's shoulder
Waiting for the promised self
To meet its other at some land's border

Perhaps that's where our split soul spies
Its twin on the other side
Perhaps the waves' sounds are our cries
Transmitted to the globe with the tide.
