Whatever Happened? Poem by Mark Kosek

Whatever Happened?

Whatever happened to the summer heat?
The kind where you saw a mirage when you looked down the street.
And the asphalt would melt your shoes and burn up your feet....
Whatever happened to that summer heat?

Whatever happened to the place where you hung?
Where you met the guys and played music and sung.
And you drank beer and smoked cigs then coughed up a lung.
Whatever happened to that place where you hung?

Whatever happened to the field back there?
Where you played all your sports without ever a care.
And you made the big shot or the catch with great flare.
Whatever happened to that field back there?

Whatever happened to the place where you grew up?
Where are your family and friends and that cute little pup?
And all the memories that would fill a giant coffee cup.
Whatever happened to that place where you grew up?

Whatever happened to the city you're from?
The great communities of proud people who would share their last crumb.
And the swept streets and clean yards that never looked like a slum.
Whatever happened to that city you're from?

Whatever happened to the country you were proud of?
The one that was an example of the flag, freedom and Our Lord above.
And was built on the strength of the people, their kindness and love.
What ever happened to that country you were proud of?
