When Hurt Knocks On The Door Poem by Laurence Overmire

When Hurt Knocks On The Door

When hurt knocks on the door
Enters without asking
Takes a seat
There in the dark corner of your heart
Refusing to leave

There is nothing to be done
Really
But wait, patiently
Perhaps to gaze out the window
See the soft snow falling on the ground
The bird that shivers on an ice-covered
Twig
The sun barely visible
In the smothering gray of winter

But spring will come
The intruders will leave
No more to be said
When the way of the world is constant
In its change from
Season to season

The stars will always be there
Whether you choose to look at them or not
Offering always the possibility
Of something timeless and new.
