When Rest Finds Me Poem by Martins Akhoeneto

When Rest Finds Me

And when the final dusk comes,
let it come without thunder
without fear reaching first
to take my hand,
without the world asking
for one last demonstration
of how much I can bear.

Let it find me
like an old friend at a tired door,
knowing the house has stood
long after its foundations ached.

Let it whisper:

You may put it down now.

And let the weight fall
like rain loosening itself
from patient leaves.
