When Roads Must Part Poem by wilhelm erxleben

When Roads Must Part

when no longer two roads can be one
and a new chapter in our lives begun
though i whished so hard for this day not to be
please see this is my way of goodbye to thee

still these matters enter my thoughts and heart
even if only for a second or thereof a part
in that moment before i can therefrom shun
my heart burns with light brighter than sun

for when love grabs you with her thousand arms
and sings her siren song, you cannot escape her charms
Not anger, nor hate, can break her strangle hold
She holds firm, makes grown men cry from her cold

so it is with a heavy heart my arm I wave
when our roads lose sight you must be brave
thank you my friend for that year
that year when our roads walked so near
