Where Were You? Poem by Maria Mortimer

Where Were You?

Ma got buried
Where were you,
While her casket got carried?
Toms' drowned in brandy
Where were you,
While he swore it was candy?
I made a cake
Where were you,
That day I turned eight?
Ma got sick,
Where were you
When the bills came in thick?
Tom got arrested
Where were you
While I perjured?
I got full marks for what I'd written,
Where were you
That day I turned seven?
Ma got angry,
Tom knew we'd go hungry
You said it was a whiskey mix
That day I turned six
Ma fell in the drive,
But I saw you
The day I turned five.
Tom caught you with a bottle,
And showed you the door
You left marks from the throttle
The day I turned four…
