Who Poem by Della Hodgson James

Who

I know of a friend, I'd like to have
  She's sweet, fair and gay.
She's good in every sense of the word
  And the same day after day.
She enver tires of good deeds
  She does them every day,
If sick, in need, she's first to help;
  She always finds a way.

She treats each, and all alike
  You'd never, never know,
From all the work her two hands do
  How she finds much time to go. I loved her when I first saw her
  I guess I love her still,
I guess I'd go on loving her
  I'm sure I always will.

Her eyes are soft and gentle like
  Her ways are kind and good,
You couldn't keep from loving her
  You couldn't if you would.

She thinks a heep of children
  They love her, every one,
She gives them all some dainty sweets
  If from far, or near they come.

I like her just for what she is
  Not for what she did or gave,
Her smiles are worth a million
  To me, just while I live.

I wonder if you'd ever guess
  Just who this friend might be.
She has ashort bible name
  The last letters are -ie.

* * * * * * *

After writing these verses
  I read them aloud
To find if the children would see.
  Before I read more,
Than half the lines.
  They were yelling, It's Jessie Roley.
