I am a girl, turning to a lady
Soon, I will be a blossomed daisy
I am a future wife and a future mother
I love to live life and I love to laugh
The Igbos like to call me 'Nwunye anyi'
Yorubas call me 'Iyawo wa'
Hausas call me 'Matamu'
Cross Riverians call me 'Uwanyin'
The rest call me our wife or anything life
I belong to no one yet I belong to all.

Yet, I find that Nwunye anyi' means "Our Wife". Do these ancient African tribes practice polygamy? Or is it just a male chauvinistique derogatory remark on a young girl?
Hello Menon, Ancient African tribes practised polygamy and polygamy is still practised in Modern Day Africa. With or without polygamy, the term is used to address the females young or old, single or married depending on the situation that leads to the remark.
