Who Determines? Poem by BASAB CHAUDHURI

Who Determines?

Affluence
Opulence
Eloquence

Rich and powerful,
bound, not free,
not even like a tree.

Somehow all are tied to all,
yet they do not know
that eventually they are bound
to fall—
together.

Deities of the modern world
die like all of us,
become statues.

How long do statues live?
Not as long as the deities,
I suppose.

The longevity of statues
remains undetermined.

Who determines?
