Why Poem by Denise Murphy

Why

asking why you do this to me is like
asking why the sun comes up everyday
its a part of life
you tell me i am surrounded by a shell
and ask why i wont let it break when i am around you
then you become sweet
and the cracks start to form
then like that your back to normal
and the pain seeps through the cracks you formed
i work hard to mend them
but then the pain is trapped deep in my heart
then once i think it has faded away
you do something
something that makes the pain resurface
and my want for you strengthens
i try to make the pain go away
then once its gone
you always soften my shell
and the cycle goes on
