Winter Poem by Azher Saleh

Winter

Dr. Azher S Saleh

When the frigid wintry winds
Howled and lashed the universe
You stretched forth your hands and eyes
To afford me some warmth.
It was a night of dread
Unlike any other.
Occasionally, thunder shatters my heart's windows
And lightning streaks them.
Truly, I was frightened
And felt consumed by fire.
Had it not been for the comforting rain
I would have at once cried out.
I spotted you from behind my window
When the clouds were heavily laden with your love.
I laid my head on my heart
Denuded my soul
And became utterly intoxicated.
O, as long as you dream of my comfort
I will gather my longing into
petals of passionate love
And scatter them on the eyelids of the evening.
And when rain returns
To patter on the windows of my wounds
And when someday winter winds lash every roof
And burn my home's lanterns
Your face and fragrance shall, nevertheless, remain
To suffuse my house with light
And perfume it with your own scent.
