Wishes Of Dreams Repeated Poem by Brian Sonberg

Wishes Of Dreams Repeated

We had dreams
in places we never knew
they could get stuck but
we rolled and played just the same.
Tomorrow could be for thoughts,
that night, the sea and sky were all that mattered.

Apologetic imprecision mocks
the unknown movements in this new dance
and our awkward bodies strove to find hold amongst
sand sinking in like some borrowed waterbed
with objections, or a desire to join in our timeless frolic.

My smile lapsed with the sudden seriousness
of breaths with meaning- of questioning eyes.
But her eyes told only of sand soaked dreams
of that moment lost in places where time fails
and eternity stands on the end of a thumbnail.

Ravished, we grasped at a hunger
we had not known and with such grace,
her hand found my face to acquiesce.
No sense could be made at that late hour,
in those throes; under that moon.

But it is too cold now for dreams.
This celebratory time pulls distance from a hat-
Leaves but one loan star,
to shiver in a vast sky uncertain.
Time counts forward to the ending of the year
with hopes of a better one to begin.
