Wistful… Poem by Betty Jo Hilger

Wistful…

Wistful…

I knew where to find a smile
Once…

I knew how to grasp his heart
Once…
With the merest quirk of brow
A lift of lips
A passing look
I knew how to connect with love
Once…

Life was so simple then
Yet now, the song has altered
Where melodies used to fall
Tripping from the soul
Each note
Perfection on its own
Discord is now the norm

I sit in dismal silence
Heartbroken, solitary, mournful …
While inner storms rage cacophonous
Telling tales of times once known
Hearts once tied
Breath once shared
While love has separated from the bone
Living proximate, yet worlds apart
Alone…

I knew where to find a smile
Once…

But lost my heart alone the way...
