Without Wanting To Be Seen Poem by Shalom Freedman

Without Wanting To Be Seen

I have to live now
Without wanting to be seen
Without ever letting anyone
See my strange ridiculous smile -

I have to live now
Thinking of myself
As the way I looked
Years ago -

I have to live now
Forgetting I look
Like so many others
I wince at seeing-

I have to live now
As I do most of the time
Not thinking of how my appearance
Is simply unpleasant
For others.
