Wolf, The Poem by Hannah Barham

Wolf, The

Rating: 4.8

A wolf went for a walk one day
Through blossomed woods; the month was May
Little did he think to find
A troubled lass, of unsound mind.
He didn't want to hurt the girl
But, naive, she let herself be drawn into the swing and twirl -
An idea of love and lust, she had
An idea of desire and romance, she had
A false ideal of men, she had
A skewed, heartbroken desire, she had.
He wolf tried very hard, he did,
To stop the fool from loving him; hurt her, he did,
But, calamity! , he found
To hurt her was to cut him to the ground,
To hurt her was to hurt himself,
So in he gave, oh, foolish wolf,
And both had dreams of love, of girl and wolf,
Day dreams
Fantasies
Happy endings
Not to be.
A sweet sixteen has no control
Her mother sent out a patrol
To kill the wolf, her daughter's love
And thus we have our moral proved:
To love is to lose,
But to lose love is to lose all.
The girl, you see, she left her ma,
And lived alone
In grief unknown
'til the dawn came that she didn't arise
But met her wolf in the sky.
