Words Poem by Nicholas J. Roberts

Words

Prattle prattle, tittle tattle,
Words that rhythm and rhyme and rattle.
The world revolves around that which is spoken:
Promises made and promises broken.
Everything must be communicated -
If it can't be written, it just isn't rated -
But forces exist not so easily seen,
Feelings that fill up the space inbetween.
There are no names to pin them down,
Forbidden thoughts that would make the pope frown:
The love of a friend, or the hate of a lover;
The things people think about one another;
Wanting to kiss a perfect stranger;
Being bored by sex or money or danger.
Reality makes our laws absurd,
Or anything based on the power of the word.
How many people rely upon chatter
To drive away the silence they fear,
To protect them from the truths that would shatter
All the unwritten lies that they hold so dear?
