You See Me Poem by B. V. Dahlen

You See Me

Rotund or hefty, large and round
The labels measure me
By others viewpoints, not my own
That is what others see

Who is inside this widened frame
Am I merely my size?
Am I defined by their beliefs?
And measured by their eyes?

Do you inquire who exists
behind these pudgy cheeks
Do your eyes skitter over me
embarrassed by such freaks

I try to analyze the way
you think of me. I strain
to get inside your head to see
the workings of your brain

Do I embody certain fears
or other ancient dread
Do I affect the way you see
yourself there in your head

When looking at me do you see
Someone with will unfettered
Or do you simply need a foil
to make yourself feel better
