You Talk Poem by Shelby Burnside

You Talk

my stomach jumps and seems to climb up into my throat.
this happens when you hold my hand and rub your thumb across my fingers.
you ask a question.
i answer you-it comes out not how i hoped it would.
i meant to say it as a whisper.
it jumped out.
it seems as if this isnt real.
but the pain feels that way.
it makes me realize that this is real.
that kiss, the kiss you gave me shot shivers down my back.
not the kind out of being cold-the kind when you feel everything is, well, right.
i still remember everything about that kiss.
the way you moved closer and the things you said before.
the things you said before hoping to make everything, right.
and it did.
or so i thought.
before you seemed almost oblivious.
although I knew you weren't completely.
now its two days after that kiss, and we haven't talked, not really.
those few seconds over the phone where you said you'd call me back.
then never did.
those don't count.
or that one phrase I said to you as you hurried down the hall.
that doesn't count either….
