Your Own Masterpiece Poem by Edith Niemeyer

Your Own Masterpiece

Your own masterpiece

Remembrance...

shakes my stance.

Does it still have to hurt?

Please—
shatterings—
give me respite.

Did you mean to say
those words
that ripped straight through
my core?

Please...
please...

let me gain
the upper ground.

Let finishings' echoes
transport me
to betters' ending.

For betterments'
unacknowledgement...

indeed,

you finished me.

Now strapped within
what I can't do without,
taken down below—

no choice
is a given line.

Crossed, you did,
my threshold.

Countless times—
stamped.

Not all thought
given freely
is yours

to annihilate.

So take
your three steps backwards.

Turn.

Face the other way.

Across the room
I glide—

disappearing
through the doorway

so you can't see

what devastation
you have created.

But slowly...

oh, so slowly...

turn I around.

And taking
that first step forward—

conquer I must

my own stones,

hidden in corners
amidst the cobwebs,

made by mind's own
inner devastation.

Entry
is a forbidden must.

So—

if hearts' broken,
transmissible connectivity
evades
your present sleep...

go sleeveless.

Let life's drizzle
touch what you
would rather conceal.

Let every drop
find what remains.

And let it become—

not the devastation
you created,

not the ending
you gave me,

but

YOUR OWN MASTERPIECE.
