Your Trojan Horse Poem by richard ilnicki

Your Trojan Horse

I was fortified,
protected from the vicious vicissitudes of love,
the impetuous ballistic kind
that would tear at my brainstem
and rupture my heart,
that irreverent infarct
whose bloodless design
was meant to disturb my pastoral idyll.
I'd had enough to contend with
from previous battles,
some of which I was still fighting,
leftover windmills.

So I put myself inside a box,
a cube with an entrance marked ' No Exit.'
Visitors were not welcomed,
especially you,
but you had other plans.

You filled a box with a ribbon on it
to the top and bows all over.
You knew I liked surprises,
and that I was vulnerable to your impetuous
moments of inspirational love,
like when you turned wet dreams into reality
in the car or in the ocean.

So, of course,
I gave instructions to open the door.
Now I live alone
with only you
and the rest of the world.
