Chasing Shadows

Forever racing raindrops, never reaching light,
Never stopping, never able, in this pointless game,
Forever chasing shadows, across the endless night.

A sliver of a moon, hardly glowing, hardly bright,
Roaring rain, howling wind, a beast that cannot be tamed,
And forever racing raindrops, never reaching light.

Is there a point, is there a purpose, to this perilous fight?
It will not bring grandeur, reap rewards, grant fame,
Only forever chasing shadows, across the endless night.

A lone star, faded and pale, flickering in fright,
Threadbare trees, desolate bushes, scattered, an archer without aim,
Forever racing raindrops, never reaching light.

Reaching the highest point, the peak, the finale in sight, only
To find yet another hill to scale, another obstacle, all the same,
Still forever chasing shadows, across the endless night.

Is there an end, was there a beginning, are there paths leading left or right
On this eternal one-way road, no passing time, no choices to its name?
Yet forever racing raindrops, never reaching light,
Forever chasing shadows, across the endless night.
