Biting Cold

Leaves fell around you,
Pools of autumn at your feet.
The sun was lost,
And so were the chirps from the trees.
The drumming of rain upon rooftops taking their place,
And you saw the world from the light of lightning.
The air stung your skin,
The cold, defending itself from those who dare cross it,
And you were one of those fools.
Even though snow was yet to fall,
Some stubborn leaves still staying green,
Resilient fruits still ripened,
The cold still bit.
Many complained, but not you.
You were the one to embrace it with open arms.
No matter how it screamed,
How hard it fought,
You were ever so patient.
Through the belligerent ice,
The warmongering blizzards,
You never once ran to the arms of the heat.
The cold thanked you for that.
And it settled down,
Into a calm, and picture-perfect winter storm.
And you could never imagine anything better.

But the cold always left.
Always turned away. Never was one to dawdle.
And the heat made its entrance.
Others rejoiced, reveled in the water and the sands.
Of the bright, green leaves and the warmth of the sun.
Of the soft grass and rolling clouds.
Of the blue, blue skies and jumping fish.
Your heart sunk.
Your body ached in the burning sun,
Skin turned red and fuming.
Head aching and sweat pouring.
Because the heat was never kind.
It was ruthless.
It was narcissistic and yelling.
To loud laughs and spilled drinks.
It started out nice but turned brutal fast.
Until the cold came to save you once again.
Who always settled, cradling you in arms of soft snow.
And mugs full of hot tea, a blanket and a book.
And you could never imagine anything better.
