On the highway the dead cat lay
becoming one with the asphalt and the clay
as the cars, lorries and SUVs passed
he did not like it that way

Like a sheet of paper blown along the street
she walks the beach seeking sex and sun
she, the other white meat
for a black, sturdy child of the poor

I cry

You ridicule me

On The Highway The Cat Lay

On the highway the dead cat lay
becoming one with the asphalt and the clay
as the cars, lorries and SUVs passed
he did not like it that way
he shut his eyes and dreamt back

Back to scrounging food from Trimart refuse bins
left open for the flies and him
he did not like it that way
he shut his eyes and dreamt back

Back to when her new man came
and used the long broom stick
and cat straddled his backside
out the house he had to stay
he did not like it that way
he shut his eyes and dreamt back

Back to his perfumed litter box
canned food; a mixture of fish and other things
placed in a silvery dish
and when he wished for exercise
he went and chased butterflies
he did like that in some way
he shut his eyes and dreamt back

Back to when she came home from work
and scratched him lightly on his head
as he purred and nuzzled her leg
and slept with her on the bed
he 'd like it still to be that way
on the highway where he lay
he tried hard to make it stay
