Robert Scott Hogg Poems

Looking out o'er calm Loch Trool
...

Walk with me in my dreams
where both of us are free
There our memories are intertwined
...

Stumbling, fumbling, falling
onto my knees in pain
Wretching, writhing, gasping
...

Sometimes hazy, fading from my minds view
mostly clear, vivid to me, as I lie and think of you
Almost tangible but never quite close enough to touch
...

When the night falls on the day I die.

Promise me only that you'll remember me with a smile.
Don't recall the times I failed or the times I made you sad.
...

When darkness falls across the seas
And hides scarred rugged land
A beacon bright, breaks through the gloom
To guide the helmsman's hand.
...

Gathered here in silence, it's not hard for us to see...
The love that binds the hearts and souls of this grieving family.
For a man, a good man, who stood so proud and strong...
A man who toiled and farmed the earth, is no more... is gone.
...

The Greatest Generation has almost gone Those tough resilient souls…are crying out for rest We mourn them…helpless…as they fall…one by one Misunderstood some-times…they tried their very best.

War stole their childhood…and their smiles Replaced them with a steely…armoured veil That hid their tears…and pain…a while And made it harder… then… for them to fail.
...

When first you walk these hallowed halls
And feel your heartbeat race
Take strength from all the friends you make
Enjoy these happy days
...

What if the could have been's and maybe's
...

It was in the heart of winter
when we were called to the River Clyde
...

Sometimes we feel emotions
that overwhelm our hearts
...

Two old ladies sat in their house
...

Another day.
To stretch and breathe this air.
To see my limbs move.
...

What madness drives us on each day
we're doomed - or haven't you been told
No matter who you are or what you say
some day you will grow old
...

The Bloody Steps O' Trool

Looking out o'er calm Loch Trool
from the seat of Bruces Stone
Rises up our kings Muldonach
standing regally alone

Heather, grass and woodland
guard the secret of that place
Where armies clashed in battle
with their hearts and souls ablaze

Many Englishmen did perish
for Edwards name that day
When the mountain fell upon them
and swept their lives away

Men and horses crushed by boulders
all surprised and stricken down
By Scots who fought like demons
and shed blood for Scotlands crown

Those highland men abounded
like demons from the hill
With the swiftness of an eagle
talons ready for the kill

Within my mind I see the fight
and hear the battle's roar
As Bruce stood tall where I now stand
his men with death did soar

'A Bruce' their batle cry exclaimed
This glen is ours again
Victorious they left the loch
Dead Englishmen remained

Oh calm Loch Trool your scene belies
the history you've known
The blood shed thick upon your shores
still taints your banks of stone

And in the night when all is still
therein the wind you'll hear
Those Englishmen on horseback
drawing closer, ever near

Their spectres gaunt, on ghostly mounts
with fear in every glance
Onwards towards their deadly fate
they trudge their horrors prance

Six hundred years and more have passed
but still they walk this glen
No rest shall ever find them
nor them King Robert's men

Looking out o'er calm Loch Trool
I see this vision that once was
When Bruce's men ran with their king
and fought for Scotlands cause

Still battle's rage throughout the world
and men still fight to rule
But the killings stopped for ever
on the Bloody Steps 'O' Trool

Written during December 1996 following one of many visits to the beautiful
Glentrool valley.
