Midnight

When night falls the lid is suddenly off
The cares and tribulations of the day;
And whether we sleep or weep, laugh or scoff
Midnight comes and day just melts away.

There's little doubt we die at midnight,
Midnight separates boys from girls;
Midnight separates fight from flight
And - finally - shells from pearls.

There are many many midnights left
But two are uniquely yours and mine:
We'll be of space and time bereft,
Such is the ultimate design.
