Pearls are dropping from my lips,

and sapphires
and beautiful diamonds,

Son Of A Goddess
i.
They say that my body is a temple,
that I should love it,
respect it.
They do not understand
that I do not worship the gods
they have built around me.
They sculpted me out of clay
from the riverbank,
but they must have taken it from
the wrong side.
My body is not a temple to Hera.
My body is not a temple to Artemis.
My body is not a temple to Athena.
ii.
My body was built
from blood
and bone
and a blessing.
They may have prayed to Aphrodite,
but Hephaestus answered.
He forged a body
made for an Aphrodite-child
but gave me ichor instead
of a soul, gave me knives
instead of looms.
iii.
We dance revelries into the night,
but no revelry
could tame my lion blood.
We whisper prayers into flesh,
but no whisper
could fill my empty heart.
We lift wings into the sky,
but no Icarus
could ever compare to me.
iv.
I break my bones,
I break my skin,
I bleed the most beautiful
crimson you've ever seen.
I'm made out of flesh,
not marble,
and I have blood,
not ichor.
It is harder to carve the shape I want
in flesh than in marble,
and harder to wash away blood than ichor,
but I do it still.
I am no deity-
I am human,
and that is the best thing
to ever happen to me.
Because deities,
wrapped in their myths
before the eyes of the masses
are unchanging,
but humans,
humans are ever-changing,
ever-shifting,
and that is the blessing
Prometheus gave us,
not fire.
v.
It was never fire.
vi.
And that's why Zeus punished Prometheus,
because Zeus is an unchanging, jealous
creature who cannot comprehend
someone greater than him.
Because humanity is changing,
always,
eternal,
they- we are not robots,
are not statues,
are not simple things that can be built from clay,
humans are not eternal
we are mortal
and one day we will all be gone
and isn't that amazing
because we're fleeting and so beautiful
because nothing that lasts forever
is beautiful and
things are only beautiful
because they are impermanent
because permanence only ruins beautiful things
and gods are permanent
and humans aren't
and that is why the gods call us petty and foul
because they are petty and foul
and we are also petty and foul
but we can change
and that is what makes humanity
better than any god
could ever be.
