The Old Man, Me And The Cemetery

I remember it was the month of June,

And the rain lashing on a day in the afternoon.

A dear one took leave of the world on this side,

And leapt into the unknown world on the other side.

Though the leap, the other side and the immortal question of existence is a mystery,

But now it was the time for us all to visit a cemetery.

As I passed the cemetery gate with all,

There stood an old man quite frail and tall.

The one who looked older than the history,

But his eyes radiated wonderment of mystery.

The old man discerned in my eyes, as a custom, yet again!

And recognized my recurring pain.

To which he had recognized since the cemetery began.

But when did the cemetery began? !

He ever suggested to put this question only if one is supremely sane.

And about the pain? !

The old man knew nothing.

For he thought pain to be timeless,

For he thought happiness to be a sublime pain,

For he thought when the pain is misspelt it sounds as pleasure.

And so he thought that pain is often cherished as a treasure.

The old man stood there under a tree.

And kept looking at me till I disappeared in the white smoke of the cemetery.

As I appeared out of the smoke in the air,

Again at the gate to leave the place at a pace fair.

The old man still there under the tree,

Looked at all of us sharply.

The old man looked at me and cried  "out of you all one is still there left inside! "

I gave the old man a bare stare,

And said to him  " Sir, the dear one you are pointing to has settled there".

The old man had surprise in his eyes,

As if I did not understand what he surmised.

He cautioned me further with despise,

That  the one among us is still inside.

As if he is waiting that someone will arrive,

And make him move out, so will we all strive.

As I promptly moved ahead, the old man pointing to the cemetery said,

" One out of you all has been left there! "

I calmly said again, "no he has settled there! "

Now the old man looked worried and anxious,

And  as such kept counting us.

He was thinking that once we left the place,

The one who has been left behind will search us in the empty space.

That once the dear one will come to his senses from the dust,

He will cry, weep and wail which the old man knew to be must.

The old man saw me walk further in a sway,

Agitatedly he cried out  " Brother! The one who is inside please don't put him away! "

"The one among you is still inside there",

I said "no old man, please go and see he has settled there".

Before the old man could speak or say,

He could now see that today it was the dear one's day.

And so we shall all have our time,

May be in some other June,

May be in some other afternoon,

May be on some other rainy day.

Yes! On that day the rain will finally melt the colorful clay,

And though only into clay-

But under the warm fire of the burning pyre,

We shall try to understand  desire,

The mysteries of life and death,

Forever and ever and ever.
