In A Way I Am Grateful

In a way I am grateful,
For it shaped who I am,

A friendship slain,
A slaughter of the lamb,

For a reason not unknown,
It unfolded like a scam,

The decision was hers,
She chose the other man.

I pushed it away,
Hoping it wasn’t true,
I failed to heed the warning signs,

It went on too long,
Extenuating in my mind,
I learned never to trust in Father Time.

It became unbearable, I had to enquire,
I told Him, but he didn’t retire,

Him? You ask, forgive me I failed to mention,
He was a friend, since I was eleven,

He was more than a friend, more like a brother,
When he faltered, there remained no other,

For him, he saw, the woman he admired,
And betrayed the brother he had acquired,

In the end he showed me no respect,
And handed me, a dagger for death.

And there it was.

A friend murdered, a lamb slaughtered and a brother broken,
Regret remains, and so it will, this is life, I have awoken.

Our lives are defined by the decisions we make.

The decision was hers,
She chose the other man,

The decision was his,
He became the lesser man,

The decision was mine,
And it was final,

In a way I am grateful,
For it shaped who I am.
