Scrubs her gleaming white teeth with a ragged brush
Spits in the sink, the blue foam staining the cream-colored tiles.
'Love? ' she snorts. 'You might be the only person who still believes in it.'

Lightning shattering the pitch-black sky, the crack of thunder
Heralds the moment when the heavens open up
And cry with me as you turn away.
You promised you'd never turn your back on me, but there it is, a blue windbreaker receding into the drab night.

Priya

Scrubs her gleaming white teeth with a ragged brush
Spits in the sink, the blue foam staining the cream-colored tiles.
'Love? ' she snorts. 'You might be the only person who still believes in it.'

But Priya wasn't standing behind the bleachers with Jay, away from the madness of gym class.
She didn't see his fingers shake as he reached for her hand.
He didn't tell her she was beautiful, even though she was sweaty and wearing baggy clothes.
Just me.

But how can I confess to Priya,
Curvy, beautiful, with her exotic coloring and cavalier words,
With her long shiny hair in rollers and mile-long legs protruding from pink boxers
Genetically attached coffee cup and yet that gorgeous smile,
That I love her cousin
More than life itself?
