Where Greater Men Have Fallen (Lviii)

Where greater men have fallen
There man wielded lighting against life
Where greater men have fallen
Worthless monuments bear their strife;
Tear the heart of their mothers
Out from each and every chest
The flood of steel courage smothers
Drowning love and ideal in their breast;
From highest peak to lowest dungeoning trench
Crowned heroes those that bear war's stench
From wretched shore to wretched shore
All sleep where time and sorrow come no more;
History has knighted many heroes with her breath
But none so kingly crowned as man-made death!
