Faith
'What is faith? ' asked the teacher
'It is the undoubting belief a credulous infant
has in its parents dear',
was a child's answer;
'Faith' said the philosopher
'is the abstruse confidence a blind man
shows in the images he forms in mind
while touching things near';
Faith is the trust that beams
from the eyes of a kindergarten teacher
leading her student onto the stage
for the student's first recital of poetry or prayer;
Faith is that ray of hope
the patient exhibits clear
while he lays down and allows the surgeon
to cut his body without a refusal tear;
Faith is the undaunted hope
in humanity without fear
seen in a child abandoned by war
to be taken with love and adopted
by someone who is present here;
Faith is the most surprising element
seen in despair
It is the ardent belief in a sunrise
after nightfall everywhere;
'Where is that faith? ' asked God
Man looked about
searched far and near
Was he able to find it
or did it disappear?
