Our Skin
OUR SKIN
Black people and white
Let's talk about the skin we're in
Hot topic you may think but why should it be
Our skin's our biggest organ. It provides protection regulation sensation and keeps us safe
Yet some see it as a subject of great controversy
How about we wake up and move beyond the
colour we cannot help
We were born with our particular shade
it came to us ready made
This may sound naive but...
Let's cease making skin such a big thing! ! !
The skin we are in is incidental
It really should not define us any more than how short or tall we are
Or area of the world we were born in
There's so much more to our being
Than our particular shade of melanin!
How absolutely tragic that so many have suffered and died yet we still fight because we're black brown pink or white
Or maybe in between!
Does it really matter whether we're inky black milky white or mid brown
Think again! Ask yourself matter to whom
It's heartbreaking that we use it to put each other ultimately ourselves, down
We could have looked around
noticing other's eyes and declared
you're not my kind
Your eyes are black green blue brown
How absurd does that sound!
People we need to wake up and realise
this obsession with skin
Is ludicrous, ridiculous, laughable irrelevant
Deep down you know it is, you do
Our skin is indeed beautiful don't be further hoodwinked but look at how
Skin colour has been used
For centuries as economic and political tool
To influence how we think about one another
To separate race from race even withinrace
to divide and to rule!
How has this worked so well are we a fool
Where we ought to have observed and celebrated our inner beauty the commonalities and love that link us
noticed the light we inherently are
We noticed skin's colour
Some sadly, foolishly risking their health by using chemicals and lightening creams in attempts to change
Since we are noticing let's take another look
Notice the stunningly awesome shades of model designer Alek Wek
notice Lupita Nyong'o's hue
Notice the gift of your own beautiful but functional skin too
remembering it's actual purpose and show gratitude for it and for you! ! !
Let's notice how wonderful God has created us and given
to each and every one
enormous gifts and talents
wrapped in multi faceted colourful breathtakingly beautiful packages
Are we saying s/he was wrong?
It wasn't to divide and drive us apart
Think my people! Who did that? Who?
Could it have been for us to share with each other
for the benefit of all on earth
Let us notice not what's outside but what's within
stop with the focus on melanin! ! !
Let us make a start by noticing instead
the connecting love and light embedded deep within all our hearts.
One love 💘
