A Love That Couldn’t Be

He marveled at how anyone could be
So shy, so wondrous, so sweet
He loved everything about her-
tiny waist, long eyelashes, full lips
The canyons of her fingers
The bones of her hips
The coos she sang as they made love...
shook his body
resonated through and through

In him she found a love that could only be felt
In the pit of an avocado
In the pause between two sentences
In the bottom of a wine glass
In the fall of her chest
In the leaves of a fern that fold inward
With the slightest brush

Together, they climbed mountains
Stopping only to tie or untie a shoe
Sometimes for mushrooms, mysterious growth
Or for clothing that needed to be removed

And when they arrived at the top
It was then, and only then,
that all wanting ceased
And they proved to each other
how quiet
they could really be

He could name the proximal and distal peaks
And showed her how to analyze the wind patterns
by observing the movement of the trees
And when the sun, radiating off of her cheeks,
saturated her soul
she cracked open a smile
A smile

And the last time
they were together
The last time
they made love
It was a love so simple, so tender and so true
Maybe it was a the sound of wind pushing against a distant star
but she thought she heard him say “thank you”

For a moment
she was complete, yet
empty
She was completely empty

He asked
Why are you crying
She said
Because I miss you
He said
But I’m here, I’m right here

What then, he escaped forth
He left her with
the pit of an avocado
the pause between two sentences
the bottom of a wine glass
the fall of her chest
and the fern
with leaves turned inward
But she had nothing to give in return
