Cwmpenna

I went back some years ago
To where I lived as a child,
To the valley that I used to know,
Beneath the mountain green and wild,

The cots in three rows are set,
Above the pit head that is no more,
The winding gear as black as jet.
Sat proudly on the valley floor

Through the garden gate the path beyond
The stream where we built the dam
That we might create the pond,
Where our khaki campbells swam

Where whimberry bushes hugged the earth
Where the tall ferns used to grow
Pine trees have taken up their birth
Row upon military row,

Never again will I go
To where I lived as a child
To that kind cot in Middle Row,
Beneath the mountain green and wild.
