Ursula Andkjær Olsen Biography

Ursula Andkjær Olsen was born in 1970 in Copenhagen. She studied music theory and philosophy and was a student at the Writers’ School in her home city from 1997 until 1999. Of the relationship between prose and poetry, Andkjær Olsen writes: "The world as it is seen through human beings consists of coordinates of various kinds . . . Poetry tries to find alternative structures, alternative coordinates to bind things together, and one of the most important basic principles of those other coordinates must probably – in spite of everything – still be called beauty. These alternative principles may be related to image, sound or rhythm, for example.)

what shall I say in a garden where everything has a name
nothing?

ornament/profusion/poetry/not
exposure/thus truth becomes profusion/it merely states what is there

humans/with all their costumes

to speak is so human it is like the
avenue of sphinxes/speechless faces/stoneheavy meaning not one

and the neighbors' curtains and the living rooms behind them maybe they are quiet
quiet living rooms

no one is innocent but some are pure and many
many do have wings

are part of the dream which is part of

reality/which is why the unadorned is sphinx-like/like a thing without a name
